Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a repetitive stress injury that develops slowly over time. It is a condition where the Median Nerve, which controls some of the sensory and motor functions in the hand, becomes compressed at the wrist. This compression leads to pain, paresthesias (prickling or tingling sensations in the skin with no apparent cause), and muscle weakness in both the hand and forearm.
CTS is more common in women than in men and, though it can occur at any age, it is most prevalent in people in their 40s. Some conditions associated with CTS are congenital but most are the result of poor posture, repetitive movements that are done improperly, and awkward hand positions while playing sports or hobbies, like bowling or tennis. Pregnancy, birth control pills, high salt diets, and some systemic diseases like diabetes can also contribute to the development of CTS.

Unfortunately, most clinical doctors don’t know how to treat this condition. A common misconception is that the problem and pain of CTS is compartmentalized in the hand and wrist only when, in fact, CTS sufferers have a primary Median Nerve crush in their neck, not their hands.
If CTS is ignored or treatments are limited to the wrist and hand, it can develop to the point where many doctors will promote surgery as the only viable treatment option, but if CTS is quickly and correctly diagnosed and treated, surgery need never enter into the equation.
Most traditional doctors will begin by prescribing a “splint” (immobilizing brace) to wear on the affected wrist where there is pain. Unfortunately, CTS patients are almost always experiencing wrist pain, so most will wear the splint for extended periods of time. This prolonged use not only limits normal hand movements but can eventually cause permanent damage by building up internal wrist scar tissue.
Following this, if no improvement is seen, which the case is often, most traditional doctors will resort to one thing: surgery; one that will cost you much money and may be fundamentally unnecessary.

Do you really need to go under the knife for carpal tunnel? Quite frankly, the answer is almost always a solid “no.”
CTS is derived from an affected Median Nerve, which originates from the nerves coming from the neck, so if you are diagnosed with CTS and your doctor is not checking your
neck, then he or she is not treating you adequately. This inadequacy of treatment is what often leads to unnecessary surgery.
If you are experiencing any of these warning symptoms of CTS: weakness of the hands, numbness, tingling, neck tension, night pain, swelling, or abnormal sensation—then you need to seek proper care: chiropractic care.
While in the care of a chiropractor, he or she will address the source of the problem: the nerves from the neck, in order to ensure proper diagnosis, care and recovery. A typical treatment will include adjustments of the neck and wrist in order to restore proper mobility and function to dysfunctional joints. Specific stretching and strengthening therapies to help strengthen weak muscles of the forearm will also be administered, with occasional use of electro therapy if needed. Additionally, soft tissue massage, which can help stretch contracted tissues and provide pain relief, can also be received in just about all of our StayBetter offices.
It is time to consult an experienced chiropractor who can successfully treat and relieve patients with CTS—without the need for drugs or surgery. You’ve already seen what doesn’t work; now it’s time to experience what does work.
