Ritalin (methylphenidate) is a legal stimulant that has been prescribed to children for the past 40 years, and is currently the most prescribed medication for children diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity-disorder (ADHD).
Like Cocaine, Ritalin is a drug that works to stimulate the central nervous system by increasing dopamine levels in the brain that heighten our sense of reward and pleasure.
In research studies among cocaine addicts on the relationship between Ritalin and cocaine, the majority of respondents indicated that injected liquid Ritalin feels just like a dose of cocaine. While it was initially theorized that Ritalin was less potent than cocaine, there is substantial research that proves Ritalin is actually more potent than cocaine in stimulating our sense of pleasure.
In fact, the most practical difference between Ritalin and cocaine, is the form in which it comes. While cocaine comes in a powder form and is generally snorted through the nose creating an immediate “high” effect, Ritalin is generally taken in pill form and takes about an hour to produce an effect that is less intense but sustained over a greater period of time.
The bottom line is this, cocaine is an extremely dangerous drug, and anything that resembles it, as Ritalin does, should not be deemed “safe” – especially for children.
