A recent study conducted by Jan Orlin, MD, and Andre Didriksen, DC, evaluated the effectiveness of chiropractic care for patients with lower back pain.
The group studied consisted of 44 patients who experienced sudden and painful low back pain. Clinical and neurologic examinations conducted by medical and orthopedic surgeons revealed no conclusive source of back pain among any of the patients. With the failure of the most practiced clinical examinations to reveal a clear source of pain among the test subjects, doctors were left unable to recommend a precise course of treatment.
After these initial examinations failed to reveal the source of pain among test subjects, they were examined by a chiropractor. The chiropractor was able to determine the underlying problem in all cases: acute sciatica1.
Following regular chiropractic care, all but two patients had recovered from their lower back pain and returned to work. A follow up study also indicated that two-thirds of those who recovered from their condition through chiropractic care also reported taking less sick leave from work.
